Some "friends" of Gordon Brown are putting it about that he won't really be damaged much by the lobbying allegations against Stephen Byers, Patricia Hewitt and Geoff Hoon because the three former Cabinet ministers are Blairites. There's a touch of schadenfreude in the air because Hoon and Hewitt were the instigators of the short-lived Labour coup against Brown in January.
But these so-called friends are not really doing Brown a service at all. The claims are potentially very damaging to Labour. Byers has wisely referred his own case  to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner John Lyon, an example of jumping before you're pushed since an investigation was inevitable.  It seems fatuous and irrelevant to talk about Brownites and Blairites in the middle of such a scandal. I can't imagine many voters saying: "that's alright then" when they are told that the three politicians were allies of Blair.  The message it sends, apart one from appalling complacency,  is that New Labour's two tribes are still at war.
