A very sombre Gordon Brown on display at his Downing Street press conference this morning, the first of these once-monthly events since July. Inevitably, it was dominated by Afghanistan. He wore a black tie and it felt a bit odd when he spoke slowly and deliberately about the NHS too. He brought the presser to an end so that it did not clash with the bodies of six other servicemen killed in the conflict arriving home.
The PM  handled the most difficult issue sensitiively  and well -- his dispute with Jacqui Janes, whose son was killed in the conflict, and whose name he misspelt in his hand-written letter of condolence, revealed by The Sun newspaper.
Brown, whose 10-day-old baby daughter Jennifer Jane died in 2002, said movingly: "I'm a parent also. I feel the pain of  people who lose their loved ones. I understand when people are grieving that they are looking for answers...I'm a parent who understands the feelings when something goes terribly, terribly wrong and I understand how long it takes to handle the grief that we have all experienced."
No one can say this was not from the heart.  Surely, it's now time for everyone to move on and  draw a line under the row over his unfortunate letter. Whether that happens is another matter.

A nice try, Andrew, but...

... even the below-the-belt rhetoric of bring Brown's deceased daughter into this discussion does not excuse his callous carelessness in dealing with the relatives of those he sent to his fucking yankee-doodle war.

As you knew very well when you penned this sly and weaselly piece.

Maybe. But the whole reason that we are in this damn war is because we've all been so dashed sporting about it - instead of presenting consistent and robust opposition to every lie they tell.

Here's Britain's policy for Afghanistan. It would be funny, were it not so tragic :(

I agree but there is no need for that language; a little restraint or imagination please

It's actually long overdue that this colossal obscenity was talked-about in the "language" it merits and deserves.

Pussyfooting around the issue only serves the warmongers who look on with laughter. Against the forces of Hell itself, we're armed with peashooters.

At least some patriots in the Third Reich tried to assassinate Hitler. We've posted some messages on a discussion-board :( Donald Rumsfeld must be cackling somewhere.

Strings of upper-case letters, eh?

That must be the "imagination" you mentioned earlier, I presume?

Oh, that's so much better.

Remind me, what was Nero doing while Rome burned? It must have been something imaginative, I'm sure.
